The Social Worker: Shiromani Dawadi

Communications, arts and literature have always been my areas of interest right from my childhood. It is through these areas that I got to learn about the Nepali society and culture so closely. I witnessed the darker sides of the society after I got into social service. Poverty, lack of education and health facilities, lack of women and children rights were my major concerns. As a growing kid, I wanted to address these problems. I wanted to contribute something for the society. Hence, as a student, I actively participated in social activities and events conducted by institutions like the Nepal Red Cross Society, Reyukai Nepal, and Lions Club to name a few. I participated in street-dramas whereby we spread messages against social violence. I was also equally active in art and cultural events, literature workshops via which we could educate and encourage people to fight against social evils and also the problems of the society.

After completing the secondary level of education, I volunteered to work as a teacher at Aadarsha Madhyamik Bidhyalaya and Shahid Primary school for almost two years. Post that. Since I am from Sunsari district at the eastern Nepal, I took up my college education there. I simultaneously took up with various health and social activities with my newly formed organizations-  Mahabir Youth Club, Art Academy and RACDBON. We took to the streets to perform dramas and cultural activities to aware people about the problems faced by women and children in the society. These organizations also conducted health camps and trained women for skilled activities. The organization is still functional and as the Founder- President, I am still associated with the organizations.

For the past 25 years, as an artist and media personnel, I have associated myself with different programs for the welfare of children and women. Caritas Nepal, Swati, Sarwanam Drama Group, CARE Nepal, Action Aid, and World Vision are some reputed organizations with whom I have worked. Together, we came up with several theme-based street dramas/plays, personality Development programs, team leadership programs, and trainings for hosts of radio and television programs. We also aired programs on television and radio to educate people about child marriage, girls trafficking, and health education.

As a media consultant, I have so far initiated programs for education and health, and children and women rights’ programs in 150 radio stations and 25 TV channels across the country. Along with Sarwanaam Drama Group and Janajagaran Drama Group, we have performed over 350 plays across 65 districts.

I feel that I have tried contributing to the children and women’s welfare at large in Nepal. From my boyhood days till now, I have initiated various programs and also supervised that the welfare programs have been effective. It has been a few years that I have associated myself with the Non Residential Nepali Association (NRNA) and Idea for Nepal. I have had this opportunity to travel across 35 countries and share my experience and also humbly felicitated at events. Also, for the past three years, I have had this opportunity to be associated with ‘Nepal Journey’- a non profitable organization based in Dallas, USA. It is run at the initiative of Ms. Mausami Shrestha. Nepal Journey has successfully hosted a number of fund raising programs. The funds collected have been successfully utilized in conducting a special library for the disabled people in the districts of Chitwan and Syangja.

Nepal has been through a large political instability and turmoil. People haven’t had chances to go to schools, learn things and enhance their knowledge. Lack of job opportunities and a poor economy of the country have compelled the youths to travel abroad seeking for better job opportunities. There are a handful of people who are willing to stay back and serve the nation. I am determined to travel through different countries and encourage the youngsters to come back and invest in their own country.
